Obituary

Noemi Marin, a brilliant world renown scholar with unmatched expertise in post-communist rhetoric and political discourse, a loving mother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend, and an amazing grandmother, past away on June 19, 2023.  Noemi was taken by cancer, but she was victorious in maintaining her beautiful mind right until the final moments.  In her home, with her loving daughter by her side, Noemi was brilliant, recalling facts from years past, challenging perspectives, and sharing love and light until the end.

Noemi was born in Bucharest, Romania and lived the first act of her life behind the Iron Curtain.  She grew up alongside her brother, Maestro Ion Marin, and was raised by her mother, Bernanda Marin, an engineer and member of the Madrigal Chamber Choir, and her world-famous father, Madrigal Chamber Choir creator and conductor and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Marin Constantin.

Noemi, a great admirer of music and the arts, chose not to follow in the footsteps of her famous musical family, but in turn built a monumental career educating the world on Post-Communist Rhetoric, Rhetorical Theory, Eastern European Political Discourse, Gender and Communication Studies, and Peace Studies: Democracies in Transition.

Noemi began her path towards international scholar in Bucharest, receiving her first graduate degree in English and Spanish Literature and Languages from the University of Bucharest.  Noemi arrived in America on February 5, 1990, adopting this date as her second birthday, the date she left behind the communist reign and all her loved ones in hopes to secure a better future, which she did.  Noemi made her way to Los Angeles, where she earned her second M.A. in Communications from California State University, Northridge, specializing in Eastern European political discourse.  She met her late husband, John Malmrose, in Los Angeles, and they married on July 4, 1993, always celebrating their wedding anniversary with fireworks and joy. Noemi’s path continued to College Park, Maryland, where she obtained her Ph. D. in Rhetoric and Political Communication from the University of Maryland.

Noemi and John finally made their way to South Florida, where they enjoyed a wonderful life until his death in November 2020.  Noemi was a Professor of Rhetoric and Culture at the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies for Florida Atlantic University.  Noemi was the editor of The Journal of Literacy and Technology. She was also a Fulbright Instructor on Intercultural Communication in Southeastern Europe.  Noemi was the President of Romanian Studies Association of America, affiliated with Modern Language Association, from 2016-2018.  Noemi was the recipient of multiple distinguished awards, including the FAU Presidential Leadership Award and the Researcher/Creative Scholar of the Year Award.  Noemi was frequently requested to participate in worldwide conferences, and she was a featured guest on both Romania TV and Romanian National Radio.

Noemi leaves behind her loving daughter, Oana, son-in-law Jeffrey, and grandchildren Charlie Razvan, Lucy Raluca, and Abby Ruxandra.  Charlie, Lucy, and Abby will particularly miss Noemi’s creative and energetic storytelling, sometimes accompanied by puppets, and always breaching bedtime with belly-aching laughter and pleads to sleep with them.  Noemi leaves her brother Ion behind as the final member of her original Marin clan, Ion’s wife Hrisanta, and her nephew Alexis.  Lastly, Noemi takes with her a wealth of knowledge that the world will struggle to replace, and a presence, a force, and a light that will live on through her descendants.

Family will receive friends Thursday, June 22, 2023, 10-11am with an 11am funeral service at the funeral home.Burial will follow at the Boca Raton Cemetery. Following the burial there will be a reception at The Fairfield of Boca Clubhouse, 21300 Lennox Drive, Boca Raton, FL 33486 at 3:00pm.
