Captain Milton “Butch” A. Flynn, Jr., age 77 of Delray Beach, Florida passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening, June 9, 2022. Butch peacefully took his last breath on his own terms and was comforted by his beloved son Ryan and brother Paul, at his bedside.
Butch was born on March 2, 1945 in Worcester, Massachusetts to Milton A. and Mildred Madeline (Urmon) Flynn. Butch and his three siblings were raised in Hicksville, NY. Butch had an exciting childhood which included flying in his aviator father’s personal aircraft. He and his brother from a young age were born with adventurous spirits pushing the limits starting with go-carts, motorcycles, cars and boats.
He joined the Navy in 1964 during the Vietnam War and was fortunate enough to be sent to the Antarctic Operations, stationed on the USS Glacier (AGB-4), the most powerful Icebreaker in the world at that time, one of only two the US Navy ever had in Operation Deep Freeze that went from the South Pole to the North Pole.
After his military service Butch was a graduate of Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY and worked with his father for General Motors in New York City. Then moved to Miami where he captained many boats doing several Trans-Atlantic crossings during the late 1970’s. In 1986 he settled in Pompano Beach, Florida where he captained the Shirttail Charlie’s Launch in Fort Lauderdale for many years. In 1992 Butch was gravely injured in a motorcycle accident and was not expected to survive. He defied all odds when he recovered, learning how to walk and talk again and continued to amaze his friends and family becoming an Able Body Seaman for the United States Merchant Marines traveling the world again, then retiring in 2010.
Butch is survived by his son, Ryan Flynn, his siblings, Mary Carol Flynn, Paul G. Flynn, Elizabeth Brumm, ex-wife Yvonne Hunt and eight nieces and nephews, Jacqueline Lambert, Kerry Rome, Bridget Rome, Kristian Rome, Tara Zeilman, Jessica Flynn, Henry Brumm and Spencer Brumm.
A Service with Military Honors will be Friday, July 29th, 2022, at 11 am at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth FL, 6501 S. State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449
After the Military Honors, family and friends will be invited to sunset Memorial Service at the home of Ryan Flynn in Lighthouse Point, to celebrate Butch’s life. Guests will be taken out Hillsboro Inlet to honor his bond to the sea by spreading a portion of his remains over the ocean.
