Bettie was born in Watervliet, New York on November 1, 1940, to the late Adeline Ann Giroux and Michael Joseph Tierney. Bettie was predeceased by her bothers Bob and Jack and sister Joan. Bettie had enjoyed a loving 56-year marriage to her high school sweetheart James (Jim) J. Powers of Troy New York. Jim passed away in 2014 and she is ready to join him in heaven. Bettie met Jim at the Catholic Central High School in Troy New York where she graduated from in 1958, married in 1959 and raised their family in Waterford, NY.
Bettie and Jim had four children, Jay (Carol) Powers of Georgetown, TX, Michael Powers of Delray Beach FL, Jill Powers of Delray Beach FL, the late Thomas Powers of Troy NY and six grandchildren, Austin Powers, Sarah Powers, the late Ryan Powers, Eden Blake-Tello, Noah Powers and Matthew Powers and three great-grandchildren, Aaden Powers, Kendrick Powers, Kaleah Powers. Bettie was survived by many nieces and nephews.
The Powers family owned and operated the Convenient Food Mart in Latham, NY which they worked together for 20 years, they sold the business and moved to Florida in 1997 to live an active retirement. It was a great place for Jim and Bettie to work together alongside their children.
Bettie’s focus in life was on Faith, Family, Friends and Fun. Bettie was an active volunteer throughout her life as a school volunteer, Meals on Wheels, St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Anne’s Church, St. Mary’s Mothers Club, Drug Counsel of Saratoga County. When she moved to Florida, she became active in several theaters in Delray Beach including the Delray Beach Playhouse, the Wick, Lake Worth Theater, and The Crest. Bettie was continually active in Al-Anon for forty years and helped many people with her commitment to the program. She was active in the Women’s Club of Delray Beach as well as Emmanual Catholic Church.
The family is very grateful for the many friends she enjoyed spending time with and supporting each other in her Las Verdes community and at the pool, card games, moon parties, church events and day trips.
Bettie enjoyed travel, camping in the Lake George region of the Adirondacks, golf, swimming, reading, going to the casino, playing cards with her large group of friends and most of all enjoying time with and shepherding her family.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, August 2, 2023, 2-4 & 6-8pm at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, August 3, 2023, 12:30pm at Emmanual Catholic Church, Delray Beach. She will be buried at the South Florida National Cemetery with her husband, James.
