William Norman Schachter, affectionately known as Bill or Billy, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at the age of 76 in Boynton Beach, Florida.

Born on September 12, 1947, in Washington, D.C., Bill grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music, where he cultivated his lifelong passion for music and education. Bill dedicated 35 years of his life to teaching band and orchestra in elementary, middle, and high schools. One of the pinnacles of his career was conducting the Prince George's County Senior Honors Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. He also composed pieces for music festivals and directed all-county honors bands and orchestras throughout Maryland.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was an avid golfer, winning seven golf championships in his community of Valencia Lakes in Boynton Beach, Florida, including three consecutive victories in the past three years. He also enjoyed running 5Ks, bowling, and playing billiards.

Bill is survived by his wife of 20 years, Carol Robbins; his children, Andrew Schachter of Washington, D.C., Christopher Harnett of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Maya Shetreat of Bronx, New York; his grandchildren, Margalit Shetreat-Klein, Elan Shetreat-Klein, and Erez Shetreat-Klein; his son-in-law, Peter Scholl; his daughter-in-law, Jess Mendez; and his siblings, Robert Schachter of Tacoma, Washington, and Jeanne Schachter Leslie of Vero Beach, Florida.
