IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rosanna
Giammanco
July 7, 1945 – December 28, 2024
Dr. Rosanna Mulazzi Giammanco
July 1, 1945 – December 28, 2024
Dr. Rosanna Mulazzi Giammanco, 79, of Piacenza, Italy; New York, NY; and Boca Raton, FL, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024.
Born in the countryside of Piacenza, Italy, Rosanna immigrated to New York City in 1959, embracing a life marked by intellectual curiosity, linguistic mastery, and artistic passion.
Dr. Giammanco was a lifelong scholar, earning a B.A. in Philosophy from Hunter College (1973), an M.A. and M.Phil. in Philosophy from Fordham University (1980), and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the CUNY Graduate School (1986). Her dissertation, The Catholic-Communist Dialogue in Italy, 1944 to the Present, was published in 1989, reflecting her deep engagement with the sociopolitical and cultural dynamics of her native Italy.
As a college professor, Dr. Giammanco inspired students across New York City, the University of Connecticut, and even at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Despite being offered tenure, her devotion to her family took precedence, leading her to shift her career focus to translation and interpretation.
An esteemed translator and interpreter, Dr. Giammanco founded Verbum Linguistic Services, Inc. She earned certifications from the American Translators Association (ATA) and the Translators' and Interpreters' Guild, where she served as chair of the ATA Italian-language certification committee. Her work, particularly in art history and technique, graced museum gift shops worldwide.
In her later years, Rosanna explored her creative side, delving into painting with the same dedication she brought to her scholarly and professional pursuits.
Dr. Giammanco was deeply devoted to her family. She is survived by her beloved son, Manfredi of New York City, a teacher and interpreter. She was predeceased by her parents, Ettore and Dina; her brother, Giacomo; her first husband, Carmelo (married 1964–1978); her second husband, Fabio (1985–2009); and her cherished companion, Tommaso (1977–1979, reunited from 2010 until his passing in 2017).
A celebration of Dr. Giammanco's remarkable life will take place at Gary Panoch Funeral Home in Boca Raton, FL, on Monday, January 6, 2025, from 4–8 p.m. She will be laid to rest alongside her father, Ettore, and husband, Fabio, at il Cimitero di Pillori in Travo, Italy.
Rosanna's legacy lives on in her contributions to scholarship, the arts, and the lives of those she touched. She will be remembered for her intellect, creativity, and enduring love for her family and heritage.
