Manuel “Manny” Jose Fernandez, age 79, of Ellaville, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, May 24th, 2026, from natural causes.
Born on July 3, 1946, in Oakland, California, Manny was the son of Manuel Fernandez, a World War II veteran and brick mason, and Dolores Campos, a devoted homemaker. He grew up with strong family values and a deep sense of discipline that would carry throughout his life.
He graduated from San Lorenzo High School, where he distinguished himself as both a football player and a wrestler. That athletic dedication foreshadowed a lifelong commitment to hard work, grit, and perseverance.
Manny went on to attend the University of Utah, where he studied English and played football for the Utes. His time in Utah helped shape the foundation of a remarkable athletic journey.
In a moment that would define his career, he packed up his Volkswagen Beetle, headed to Miami and tried out for the Miami Dolphins. He earned his place on the roster through determination and talent alone.
That decision launched a legendary professional football career. Manny became a key part of the Miami Dolphins’ historic 1972 undefeated season and the renowned “No-Name Defense.” He is especially remembered for his extraordinary performance in Super Bowl VII, where he recorded 17 tackles, anchoring one of the most dominant defensive efforts in championship history.
During his distinguished NFL career, he helped lead the Dolphins to two Super Bowl championships, earned multiple All-Pro and All-AFC honors, and was named the NFL’s Unsung Player of the Year in 1973. In recognition of his lasting impact on the game, he was later honored by the Miami Dolphins with the induction into the Dolphins Walk of Fame and Dolphins Honor Roll. He was also selected on to the franchise’s Silver Anniversary Team and 50th Season All-Time Team.
Following his retirement from professional football, Manny dedicated nearly 30 years of service to First American Title Company, where he built a respected and steady career. Beyond his professional life, he remained deeply involved in community and alumni organizations, including the NFL Alumni Association, the Boy Scouts of America, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Safari Club. He was especially proud of his involvement with The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis (Buoniconti Fund), supporting its mission through alumni events and charitable efforts.
Off the field and throughout life, Manny was an avid hunter and wildlife enthusiast. (We all know the alligator story). He spent his time hunting big game across the US and beyond. He also enjoyed fishing, smoking a good cigar and spending time with family and friends.
Manny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marcia Lee Fernandez, who passed away on April 27, 2015. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Gabriel and John Fernandez, and was the last living son of his family.
He is survived by his children, James Fernandez and Christina Dailey, four grandchildren who will miss him greatly; Savannah, Taylor, Aidan and Dylan.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Greg and Becky Streetman, and Frank and Connie Freshwater for their enduring friendship with Manny. For the last 15 years, their love, help, and steady presence in his life meant more than words can fully express.
The family also gratefully acknowledges the love and support of all who knew him.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, July 1, 2026, 5-8pm at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 2, 2026, 11am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Boca Raton Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Manny Fernandez to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Safari Club International or The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis.
