Obituary

Howard T. Glass, age 83, of Jupiter, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on September 9, 2024, after suffering a cardiac event. He was found in his car at Juno Beach, one of his favorite places, following a training run as he prepared for his next Ironman triathlon in Cozumel, Mexico.

Born on March 28, 1941, in Bangor, Northern Ireland, Howard's early life was marked by achievements and adventures. He earned a Shell scholarship to attend Gordonstoun School in Scotland and began his maritime career with Shell Tankers and Bowaters in 1958. After obtaining his Chief Mates qualification, he joined the Manchester Ship Canal as a helmsman and trainee pilot. It was during this time that he honed his entrepreneurial skills, launching ventures including rotovating, turfing, and a yacht delivery service, as well as his real estate business, Home Wise, where he was a pioneer of video property tours. Howard also had a passion for trading exotic cars.

He built a cherished home named Athena in Pantymwyn, North Wales, where he lived with his wife Kathryn and their daughter Lydia. After falling in love with the Florida Keys during his first visit to the USA in 1991, Howard purchased a wooded lot in Marathon and created a second family home.

Following his move to Palm Beach Gardens with his second wife, Esther, Howard faced a difficult period of depression in retirement. However, after receiving a road bike as a gift, he discovered a renewed passion for life. Within months, he was off medication and had embraced an active lifestyle that included biking, swimming and running. At age 68, he completed his first sprint triathlon and went on to become an admired Ironman triathlete, finishing over 40 events worldwide, including two Kona Ironman World Championships after turning 70.

Howard lived life on his own terms, inspiring many with his determination, infectious laugh, and unwavering optimism. He embraced the mantra, "Just Do It," and was a mentor to countless athletes.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Lydia; granddaughter, Ella Sophia; almost son-in-law, Foster; brothers, James and Bernard; sisters-in-law, Barbara and Helen; nieces and nephews, Deborah, Robert, Kevin, Catherine, and Jim; and his girlfriend of five years, Nhora Serrano Restrepo. He was predeceased by his brother Roger Glass and sister-in-law Jill.

A celebration of life is planned for early 2025 at Waterways Cafe in Palm Beach Gardens, pending renovations. Details will be shared in the coming months.
