Gene F.Basili, 82, of Boca Raton, passed away suddenly on November 9, 2010. He was born in Worcester, MA, on Aug. 4, 1928 to Gene and Mary Basili. Gene was the cherished husband of Marie Basili (Carpanelli.) He was the brother of Robert and Richard and was also survived by 4 children Cheryl, Brian, Debra, and Denise; and 4 step-children John, Deborah, Daniel and Linda. He will also be dearly missed by 13 grandchildren. Gene played as a professional musician throughout the country with the Variety Boys and then with the John Brogan Band until the group broke up in 1988. During that time, Gene enrolled at Westfield State College where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. After going to school nights and summers, Gene received both a Masters Degree of Education and C.A.G.S. in Administration. He began his teaching career in 1960 as a 9th grade science teacher before going on to teach physics at Technical High School in 1966. Gene was appointed assistant principal at Forest Park Junior High School until 1973. Gene then became assistant principal at the High School of Commerce and after 6 years was appointed principal. He expanded the faculty to include foreign languages, bilingual teachers. Innovation in the academic program have been a hallmark for Gene including programs at local colleges allowing Commerce seniors to attend college for free while still at Commerce and receiving college credits. Gene also served on the board of Local 171 Springfield Musicians and continued to play his accordion at many various functions. He served as a minister and member of Parish Council at Holy Name Church. He was active in the Re-encounter Christ program at the House of Correction and was also awarded the Serviam Award at the Columbus Day commemoration activities for over 30 years of outstanding service to the community. Gene then retired to Boca Raton, FL and has spent his time sailing the world together with his wife. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in his honor on Nov. 22, 2010, 10am in the chapel at St. John Catholic Church, 10300 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, FL.
