IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gay
Garlid
November 23, 1928 – March 28, 2023
Gay Garlid, aged 94, passed away at her home in Oak Bridge Terrace at St. Andrews Estates in Boca Raton, FL, on March 28, 2023.
Gay (Geraldine Gay Garrison) was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on November 23, 1928, to Charlot (Gay) and Ralph Hamilton Garrison. Following her father's death when she was six, she moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, with her mother. Gay graduated high school from Shattuck-St. Mary's Hall, in 1946, where she formed life-long friendships. In 1950, she graduated from Macalester College with degrees in Spanish and French. While a sophomore at Macalester, Gay met her future husband, Wayne Garlid, due to the college's then mandatory requirement to attend chapel with assigned alphabetic seating. After spending a post-graduate year studying in Aix-en-Provence, Gay and Wayne were married on June 6, 1952. They had a daughter, Jennifer (Garlid) Sherman, and a son, James Garlid. In addition to being dedicated to her family, Gay was passionate about education, especially raising scholarship money for women. She was President of the American Association of University Women in St. Paul and spent many years teaching languages in St. Paul's Schools' Adult Education program. In 1976, Gay and Wayne moved to Boca Raton, Florida. Gay was a voracious reader, a remarkable bridge opponent, and an avid tennis player. She volunteered at the local library and was also dedicated to furthering scholarships through Florida Atlantic University. Each evening at 5:00, Gay enjoyed sitting by her pool, drinking a Manhattan cocktail with her family and friends. In addition to her husband and children, Gay is survived by two granddaughters, Emily Sherman Horton (Scott) and Eliza Sherman Cirino (Carl). She was predeceased in death by her son-in-law, Jeffrey J. Sherman.
