Obituary

Colin Victor Powell, 80, of Highland Beach, Florida, died on Thursday 26th September 2024.

Colin was born on September 9th, 1944, in Northumberland, England during World War II to Russell and Kathleen Powell. Younger brother to Alan, the family moved to Prestwick, Scotland where he attended Ayr Academy. Whilst studying at Glasgow University he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Strain, know to all as Liz. They were soon married and went on to have four children: Robert, Christopher, Linda and Colette.

His first career was in meteorology, but he soon moved into the world of computing with IBM, where he stayed for the rest of his working life, becoming a Senior Technical Staff Member. This job took him to many places across the world for work, including a number of relocations to the United States, and he ultimately settled in Florida in 1990.

Colin had a lifelong love of music. Inspired by early Rock and Roll he became the singer and bass player in a band on the Glasgow scene called The Black Arrows. This passion continued throughout his life, covering all genres of music and took him to many live concerts throughout his life.

Family holidays were especially important to him. Annual vacations to Vanderbilt Beach, Florida for over 40 years led to many wonderful friendships and fond memories involving those he called 'The Naples Family'. Colin & Liz also began a love of cruising, settling on Royal Caribbean as their chosen cruise line, they travelled near and far together, seeing new places together and making many new friends.

Following the sad passing of his beloved wife in 2014 after 49 years of marriage, Colin continued to cruise, becoming one of Royal Caribbeans top cruisers and a regular on their ships. The friendships he made on his travels around the world meant a great deal to him, and he also loved travelling with his family on these journeys.

Colin leaves behind to cherish his memory his four children: Robert Powell and his wife Lorna, Christopher Powell and his wife Penny, Linda Fletcher, Colette Turner and her husband Shane as well as his cherished Grandchildren, Lillie, Jasmine, Lizzie, Cassidy, Melody, Poppy, Fallon, Savannah and Maxwell and his Great Grandchildren, Noah, Bella and Henrietta.

A service in celebration of his life will be held at Gary Panoch Funeral Home, 6140 North Federal Hwy, Boca Raton, Florida 33487 on Sunday 6th October 2024 at 1.30pm, and his funeral and interment will take place in England at a date to be arranged.
