IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles John
King
July 25, 1941 – February 8, 2017
CHARLES J KING
Born on July 25,1941 in Philadelphia to John and Magdeline King, Charles (Chuck) King passed away on February 8, 2017. A graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School, he earned an Electrical Engineering degree from Drexel University in 1964. Chuck played basketball for the Dragons as a Forward and was known for his scoring, rebounding and overall "heads up" play.
Upon graduation he was employed by Exide Storage Battery Company before embarking on a 35-year career at IBM that began first in Philadelphia; then White Plains; then Greenville, S.C. In 1983 he came to Boca Raton, FL to work on the development of the personal computer. After finishing his career in Austin, Texas he retired to Delray Beach. While at IBM he was instrumental in creating the OS/2 operating system and tailored IBM products for special needs users.
Sports played a major role in Chuck's life. As a kid, he would arrive early at Philadelphia Phillies games to help the bread vendor carry the rolls into the ballpark – thereby gaining free admission to games. He played basketball into his 50s. He attended enough youth baseball, basketball and soccer games to earn an Olympic medal – encouraging and even coaching his children.
In his later years King enjoyed traveling the world with Pat and close friends. He was a master at the grill, as anyone who has ever tasted one of his steaks can attest. He always put the needs of his family, friends and employees above his own. He touched the lives of all who knew him and will be forever cherished and missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Patricia, and five children: Charles Jr, Christina Blodgett (Ned), Beth Anne Fergus (Craig), Brad (Erinn), and Amanda. He was so proud of his 7 beautiful grandchildren: Cade, Maya, Dylan, Jaden, Jake, Zach, and Kate. He will also be missed by his siblings; John, Mary, Ronnie, and Gerry King.
The viewing will be held at Gary Panoch Funeral Home located at 6140 N Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 334487 on Sunday, Feb.12, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday Feb. 13 at 11 am. at Emmanuel Catholic Church located at 15700 S Military Tr., Delray Beach, FL.
