IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carl Henry
Grant
June 12, 1938 – December 17, 2022
Carl Henry Grant of Boca Raton, Florida, peacefully passed away at home on Saturday December 17, 2022, lovingly surrounded by his family.
Born June 12, 1938, in the rural countryside of Tunbridge, Vermont, amidst a sprawling apple orchard and meager family means operating a sawmill, Carl excelled as an outstanding student at South Royalton High School, graduating valedictorian in 1956, then subsequently attending the University of Vermont where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, cum laude. This is where Carl met his soulmate and love of his life, Grayce Arlene Darling. They fell in love and after a year of engagement, they married amidst family and friends in June 1960 at St Michael's Episcopal Church, followed by a reception at the Historic Society's, Stone Fence Inn in Brattleboro, Vermont.
Upon their graduation from UVM, the couple relocated to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York, where Carl had landed a prestigious position as an Electrical Engineer with IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. Within a few years, Carl was promoted to IBM's Kingston, NY offices and the couple relocated to Woodstock NY, where they built a custom home to start a family, raising two children.
In July 1969, Carl was on standby to fly to NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas in support of the famous Apollo 11 space mission that first landed humans on the moon. Carl had worked on the IBM Systems/360 mainframes that translated, calculated, and relayed information to Mission Control to direct every phase of the mission as well as transmit data needed by astronauts over 240,000 miles away.
Carl was also an inventor. He co-created two breakthrough patents filed by IBM: Patent #4065810 on Dec 27,1977 for "Data Transfer System" and Patent #4275440 on June 23, 1981 for "I/O Interrupt Sequencing For Real Time And Burst Mode Devices".
Decades later, Carl transferred to the Boca Raton, FL office in 1983 where he joined the emerging Personal Computing division. Carl remained at the Boca Raton office until he retired from IBM in 1994. During his 34-year career at IBM Carl received numerous corporate awards and letters of recognition. He frequently traveled for business to Raleigh, NC and Paris, France with his IBM teams.
Outside of work, Carl was a devoted husband and father, engaging with his family in sports, hobbies, and travelling. The family vacationed regularly to historic sites across the USA, memorable trips to Europe visiting England, Denmark, France, and Spain or visiting family in Vermont, Massachusetts, Ohio, New York and Florida. Carl was an avid skier, hiker, fisherman and hunter, instilling an active outdoor lifestyle in his children. He was a voracious reader of all genres but particularly enjoyed science fiction. Carl and Grayce created a family culture of exploration and learning that would serve their children well.
In retirement, Carl enjoyed photography and became a motorcycle enthusiast, riding to the Florida Keys and touring the Blue Ridge Parkway. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races, Football games, and spending time with friends. He regularly travelled to visit family across the USA accompanied by his Boston Terrier sidekick.
Carl will be lovingly remembered by his children, Karla and Kevin (Angeline); brother-in-law Leonard (Barbara), and several nieces and nephews Carl was predeceased by Grayce, his beautiful wife of 34 years, and chose to never remarry; Carl was an only child and predeceased by his father Henry; and his mother Bessie, who also passed away on December 17th; He was a strong, no-nonsense and resilient man, who lived life his way, ardently refusing to eat vegetables of any kind; Carl enjoyed life to the fullest. Carl accomplished himself as a husband, father and careerman, his achievements honed out of hard work, grit and ambition. He leaves behind a legacy as a good neighbor, dependable friend, and loving husband and father.
