Tommaso was a genial, life-loving, generous, chivalrous, yet humble spirit. Born in the small hill town of Baucina near Palermo, Sicily, he left penniless for Venezuela in search of his fortune in 1954 at the age of 22. Trained as a radio technician, he opened a radio repair shop in the Italian immigrant community of Valencia and prospered. After a few years he moved to NYC where he attended a technical school. Back in Palermo he built up a thriving appliance sales business, married and had two children, Massimo and Cinzia. After suffering a reversal of fortune in his private life and his business, he came back to New York to start anew in 1974. His third child, Stefania, was born there. In addition to his children and spouses, he is survived by four grandchildren.

Affabile, generoso, estroverso, cavalleresco e però semplice,Tommaso soprattutto amava vivere. Nato a Baucina, nelle colline dell’entroterra palermitano, partì squattrinato per il Venezuela in cerca di fortuna: era il 1954. Aveva 22 anni. Avendo appreso l’arte della radiotecnica dal cognato, aprì un negozio nella comunità di emigranti italiani di Valencia ed ebbe fortuna. Dopo alcuni anni si traferì a New York dove frequentò un istituto tecnico, diplomandosi. Tornato a Palermo, impiantò una fiorente attività di vendita di elettrodomestici e affini, si sposò e nacquero due figli, Massimo e Cinzia. Purtroppo, dopo alcuni anni sia l’attività sia la vita famigliare si incrinarono, e Tommaso ripartì per New York per ricominciare da capo. Era il 1974. La terza figlia, Stefania, è nata a New York. I figli (sposati rispettivamente ad Anna, Roberto e Joe) gli hanno dato quattro nipoti: Alessio, Andrea, Maria Grazia e Nico.

Tommaso carried his heart on his sleeve. Politically, he was mindful of his humble roots and always rooted for the underdog. He was a man of sudden, boundless enthusiasms who seduced you with his elegant, engaging manners, his sincerity, his old-world chivalry and his soulful blue eyes. Up to the end he found joy in the smallest things in life. A steady, devoted friend, his greatest gift was a contagious joie de vivre, a live-for-the-moment readiness. Life, to him, was an apple you should definitely bite into. The glass was always half full, not half empty, and the grass greener on the other side of the fence. St. Augustine has written, “love and do what you will” and this epitomizes Tommaso: he loved much, but above all he loved life in all its facets. He was proud of his Italian roots, and in recent years, having found once more peace and companionship, traveled often and extensively up and down the Italian boot.

Tommaso era un uomo con il cuore in mano. Politicamente, non dimenticava le sue umili origini e si schierava sempre dalla parte dell’oppresso. Si entusiasmava facilmente e seduceva,

trascivana con i suoi modi accattivanti, il suo esprimersi sincero, il fare cavalleresco vecchia maniera, e i suoi occhi azzurri dove ci leggevi l’anima. Fino all’ultimo, ha inseguito la gioia anche nelle minuzie della vita. Da amico fidato e devoto, il suo dono più grande era proprio una contagiosa joie de vivre, l’essere sempre pronto a vivere l’attimo. Per Tommaso, la vita era una mela che bisognava sicuramente mordere. Il bicchiere era sempre metà pieno, mai metà vuoto; e l’erba del vicino era sempre più verde della sua. Dice Sant’Agostino: “Ama e fa’ ciò che vuoi” e questo era lui in nuce: ha molto amato, ma soprattuto ha amato la vita in tutti i suoi dettagli del quotidiano e le sue sfaccettature. Orgoglioso di essere italiano, negli ultimi anni, avendo di nuovo trovato pace e affetti, si divertiva a viaggiare su e giù per il Bel Paese.

In the last two and half years he endured his encroaching illness with simple dignity, adapting to the gradual loss in the quality of life yet always willing to hope, and laughing and joking to the end. One loss he found difficult to bear was that he could no longer enjoy the beach and the water, for he had a life-long affair with the sea – the reason why he made Boca his home for the past ten years. Until a few months ago, he still went to the beach carrying his oxygen tank with him. Sitting at the water’s edge, he marveled at the awesome mystery of nature and mused about the afterlife.

Negli ultimi due anni e mezzo ha sopportato l’inevitabile progredire della malattia con dignitosa semplicità, adattandosi man mano allo scemare della qualità della vita, ma sempre aperto alla speranza: fino all’ultimo sapeva ancora ridere e scherzare. Una perdita che gli pesava molto era il fatto di non poter più godere del mare, anche solo passeggiando sulla sabbia: Tommaso ha sempre amato il mare e si era trasferito a Boca Raton soprattutto per questo. Fino a qualche mese fa andava ancora in spiaggia trascinandosi dietro la bombola dell’ossigeno. Seduto sul bagnasciuga, osservava la maestosità, il mistero della natura, e meditava sulla vita a venire.

A man of simple but deep faith, when he died Friday he was totally alert and conscious, ready to meet his Maker, trusting that to those who have much loved, much shall be forgiven. He died smiling. Tommaso, you spread joy to those who were fortunate to share your life. Rest in peace.

Tommaso aveva una fede semplice ma forte. Al momento del trapasso, venerdì 5 maggio nel pomeriggio, era pienamene lucido e cosciente, pronto a presentarsi al suo Fattore, fiducioso che a coloro che molto hanno amato, molto sarà perdonato. E’ morto sorridendo. Tommaso, hai dato la gioia a quelli che hai incontrato nel tuo cammino. Riposa in pace.
