Isidore "Sonny" Ifshin, 93, passed away on December 15, 2017, surrounded by family. His life was defined by his service to his family, country, and community. Extensively well-read, he was known for his esoteric conversations, wry sense of humor and fondness for poetry and philosophy, and was an avid collector of postal memorabilia. In 1943, Sonny joined the Army Air Corps and was deployed to Italy as an engineer/top turret gunner with the 57th Bomb Wing.  During his 60th mission, he was shot down, wounded, and taken as a P.O.W.  Among his honors are the Purple Heart and French Legion of Honor. This amazing story was published in 2014 in Italian and English as The Story of the 'Maybe'. A memorial park resides in Ronzo-Chienis, Italy in honor of his squadron. After the War, he joined the U.S. Postal Service rising to rank of Postmaster prior to his retirement. Sonny was born in New York to Morris and Yetta Ifshin. He is survived by his brother, Edward (Hisako) Ifshin; children, Jay (Leslie) Ifshin, Suzanne (Brett) Jackson, Deanne Batterman, and Faye (Blake) McBride; grandchildren, Ethel (Loic) Williot, Rebecca Ifshin, Saul Ifshin, Chelsea (Jeff) Zastrow, and Caitlin Redfern; and great-grandchildren Arthur Badia, Yuna Chatel, Ezekiel Zastrow, and Jackson Zastrow. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jule, brother Lawrence Ifshin, and sister Irene Ifshin.  He leaves behind many dear friends and family. A small service will take place in Boca Raton, FL with later interment at Arlington National Cemetery.  Donations may be made in Sonny's honor to Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A., 1811 R Street NW, Washington, DC 20009. A funeral service will be held Friday, December 22, 2017, 11am at the funeral home.
