Wayne Garlid, aged 98, passed away at his home in Oak Bridge Terrace at St. Andrews Estates in Boca Raton, FL, on March 16, 2024.
Wayne was born in Ellsworth, WI, on May 13, 1925, to Norwegian immigrants Marie (Danielson) and Albin Garlid. Wayne joined the Navy during World War II and fought as an airman in the Pacific, serving on the USS Bougainville and USS Cape Esperance. He continued to have a career in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a commander in 1986. Thanks to the GI Bill, Wayne was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Macalester College in 1950. He met his wife, Gay (Garrison) Garlid at Macalester.
Wayne supplemented his expenses during college by working part-time as a janitor at a local industrial cleaning company, Multi-Clean (later H.B. Fuller). After graduation, Wayne began work in sales and ended up working at H.B. Fuller for his entire professional career. His last position before retirement was Senior Vice President of the international division, conducting business all over the world.
In retirement, Wayne was known for his gardening skills, annually grafting over 200 orchids to the trees outside his Florida residence. He was an avid watcher of Bloomberg News channel and enjoyed analyzing and predicting the stock market.
In addition to his wife, Wayne is predeceased by his son-in-law, Jeffrey J. Sherman. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Garlid Sherman, his son, James Garlid, and two granddaughters, Emily Sherman Horton and Eliza Sherman Cirino, and their husbands, Scott Horton and Carl Cirino.
