South Florida VA National Cemetery

• The new 313-acre South Florida VA National Cemetery will serve veterans’ needs for the next 50 years. The cemetery is located in Palm Beach County in Lake Worth on U.S. 441 just south of Lantana Road and north of Boynton Beach Blvd. Miller Legg and Associates, Inc., of Pembroke Pines, Fla., was selected to prepare the master plan and design development documents for the project.

• Burials at South Florida VA National Cemetery are planned to begin in the spring of 2007. Toaccomplish this goal, VA awarded a contract for construction of Phase 1A early turn over area of the project in June 2006. This first increment of development includes

approximately four years worth of burial facilities plus temporary administration and maintenance buildings.

• VA awarded a contract to prepare construction documents for Phase 1B of the project in May 2006. Once the construction documents are complete, VA will award a contract forconstruction of Phase 1B in the spring of 2007. The contract would be completed in late 2008. It will replace the temporary buildings of Phase 1A with permanent buildings and add an additional six years worth of burial facilities.

• VA prepared an Environmental Assessment for the South Florida VA National Cemetery site in December 2001. In August 2002, the Department of Veterans Affairs purchased the site from private citizens.

• This new cemetery to serve veterans in the south Florida area is the fifth national cemetery in

Florida. Florida’s other four national cemeteries are: Barrancas, St. Augustine, Florida, and Bay Pines.
